This the library that inspired my latest quilt pattern My Library Quilt. We love Harry Potter and the Gryffindor Common Room was always my idea of the perfect place to read. I wanted that feeling in our home but I didn’t want it to feel Warner Bros themed. So I set out capture the feel: the cozy vibe and the relaxing homey feel of Gryffindor Common Room.

At night this room feels so cozy and takes on ambiance of its own even though it is open to my sewing studio, the game area and the homeschool area. The entire lower level of our home is mostly one large room. This was a kitchenette that we had removed by our contractor. I designed and sketched out the bookcase and he built it. My husband and I (mostly him) painted this bookcase using Theatre Red by Sherwin Williams. It took two coats of primer and 6 coats of red to acheive that deep dark moody color I wanted.
The quilt took a few samples of solids to get it just right as well! I used a mix of Moda and Kona ordering a few close colors to ensure I had the “right” red. I wanted my version of “My Library Quilt” pattern to be just like our home library. I think I achieved that look.

The quilting on this really does make it feel like our bookcase. The mug on the quilt is a reminder that I usually have a mug of coffee next to me when I am here with the kids and reading or cross-stitching. I have my Gryffindor coffee mug in our Gryffindor Library with our Gryffindor inspired quilt. These pictures make me so happy because I had a vision so long ago and once the library was complete-I knew it needed a bookshelf quilt.

I will keep the quilt draped here probably year round because I am always cold whether it is because its cold outside or hot outside and cold inside (for me) with the AC on.

The applique words are made from Harry Potter newsprint fabric I saved for nearly two years! I never knew what it would be for but it fit exactly here and I had enough for the binding.

Since this space is all about cozy I added Shannon Fabrics Cuddle fabric for my backing. It adds a most wonderful weight and it makes for an amazing texture. All the quilting details show up so wonderfully on cuddle backing and is the perfect snuggle quilt.

Like the Gryffindor Common room this space has so many textures in it that lends to the cozy atmosphere. From the chairs to the cuddle, the many layers add warmth and interest.

This space is all about details from the color to the trim and so was this quilt. Lin quilted the most amazing details on this quilt from the book spines to the beadboard lines. In fact so many of the books have an entirely different design quilted on them.
This quilt pattern is perfect for adding those special details whether it is custom quilting or embroidery this quilt is worth adding those touches. It is surely going to become an heirloom.

I wanted the bookcase to really be set off so I added borders around the quilt and I saw it as another opportunity for personalization. I had Lin quilt some of our favorite book titles! Oh how I love the beautiful script and how I love that it invites someone to read what our favorite titles just might be. This quilt is absolutely one of my favorites that I have made.

I hope that you will love this quilt as much as I do and that you give it a try! This Library quilt pattern was designed with ease in mind. It has lots of blank space and artfully stacked books making it faster to make a block. It is fully modular since all the blocks are the same size and the mug is optional. You can re-create the version I made or you can make it your own. I can’t wait to see what you make! Please share on instagram using #mylibraryquilt and tag me @homewithandreasims.
