The Sweater Quilt: Fall Version-the details, the colors, the quilting

The Sweater Quilt started out as a themed Christmas quilt. As the design began to form, I realized I wanted to make a Christmas sweater quilt, a Halloween sweater quilt, a fall quilt, etc. I knew then that I wanted it to look like a sweater but also be generic so that it could be the ULTIMATE seasonal quilt. You guys know how much I love my seasonal quilts.

This particular version, came about because of my love of fall. Last year I made a fall themed quilt using Knitted Star quilt pattern by Brittany of Lo and Behold Stitchery. I loved that solids quilt more than any other. I did the pull based on the fall colors of Ohio. It was all of my fall colors and it was one routinely my most popular quilt posted. I wanted to do another fall color pull but this time based on my love of fall things. To me fall is pumpkin spice everything, mulled apple cider, baking, hot soups and lots of lattes.

I wanted this quilt to feel like my idea of fall in a quilt.

I wanted this quilt to feel and look like a cozy fall sweater so I used Shannon Fabrics Luxe cuddle in Silver fox. It is so superbly soft and absolutely stunning with its depth of color.

I use minky as a backing more often than any other backing. They are so soft and warm. Let’s face it, in the midwest it is cold about 7 months out of the year so the warmer the better. I often get asked about batting with a minky backing. I have always used batting with my backing. It adds stability and it makes for a heavier quilt. I absolutely love it! I have quilted minky on my domestic machine and sent my quilts out to be quilted- and they both worked just fine. The interesting thing about minky is that you still get that wonderful texture in the backing.

The quilting outline absolutely shows and looks like a sweater. Speaking of the quilting…

Lin is a long armer who saw my starglass quilt at Home Grown Home Sewn. She reached out to me and boy am I glad she did. I have loved seeing her work. I have loved collaborating with her. She can be found on instagram . This quilt is all about my love of fall things so I asked Lin if she could center pumpkins on the orange star and maybe a coffee mug (holding either apple cider or a pumpkin spice latte). I am thrilled with how the quilting turned out!!!! Talk about special.

The pumpkins with leaves are exactly what I see as a sweet baking pumpkin. Baking pumpkins are smaller than carving pumpkins so I thought this was a fitting design.

I loved the white space in the HST rows. It isn’t the largest space so I was not sure if a quilting design could be centered. I asked for a mug. Lin, ever so talented, sent me this one and I okayed it! The mugs are so sweet. They have a little curly cue of whispy steam. It is so perfect because I am rarely without a mug of hot mulled apple cider or a pumpkin spice latte.

Part of the design that I had for the sweater look was to have a big stripe set off by smaller stripes. I knew that this would be a great opportunity for some fun quilting designs. Lin came up with fall leaves end to end and I loved it. It really helps set off the sweater look.

The quilt has a lot of loft thanks to Lin outlining each shape! She outlined (free-motion mind you) the stars, stripes and every square in the four path row!! Sigh. I love this quilting.

I had to take some pictures in front of our doorway and show my beautiful garden! I love our flowers and it is a perfect place for quilt photos.

The fall theme was made possible by the beauty and depth of the fabric. I used Art Gallery Pure Solids. They are my favorite solids to use. The fabric is oh so soft and they have such a saturation and muted tone that speaks to me. In fact, this pattern shows all of my fall color pull and even shows my color placement! You too can make this version.

I dont know what it is about quilts and stone. It just really sets off the fabrics.

My 10 yr old gal helped me out by taking my picture next to the quilt. And YUP, I am absolutely dressed to match my quilt. This gazebo though was the best place for pictures. The whole garden farmhouse was stunning.

I need to find out who made this- or sold this? I mean its perfection. They had a table set up inside and hanging baskets around it. The moss all over the roof was cottage like. Loved it!

As if the quilt photoshoot could get any better? It did! They had the water fountain turned on and it was lovely.
