Ombre Day Quilt

So many people have started quilting since the start of Covid. With lots of time at home, there has been a new discovery of crafts of all types. I wrote this pattern with those quilters in mind. There are very few patterns for beginner quilters. Sometimes it can be so daunting to start a quilt because of the time commitment. For a beginner looking to get their feet wet, that can be daunting.

Ombre Day Quilt is perfect for beginners since it can be made in one day. Experienced quilters could make this in less than a day! I have included detailed instructions for beginner quilters. It is nothing to think of all jargon we quilters use on a daily basis but if you are new-it can be so confusing. I define all the basic terms, give tips for piecing and even have a few ombre versions mocked up for an ombre design so you don’t have to think about it.

The ombre is beautiful and subtle. For this version I used Art Gallery Elements Blenders. It was so easy to just pick a start color and then the next few shades. Then I wanted a nice warm color to make the greys pop. I used Pecan Praline which is probably one of my favorite colors ever now. The decostitch fabric is absolutely as soft as the Pure Solids by Art Gallery. If you have not sewn with Art Gallery Fabrics, then you need to get on it because it is quite an experience.

Many of their colors are warm and saturated which speaks to my love of neutral colors. Since these are the blender fabrics, they have just a hint of a print which makes them feel modern and current.

I decided to do a scrappy binding using all of my leftover fabrics from my Fat Quarters. I love how the binding echoes the ombre colors. The quilting was quick and easy, but effective, straight wave. The wave gives some movement to the otherwise still quilt pattern.

What is it about snow and a quilt? The striking colors against all that white. It really allows the quilt to sing and show its brilliant color palette.

This is the perfect quilt to make an ombre design with. Ombre quilts can be quite an undertaking but since this is just sqaures and sashing-it is easy to select fabric.

This was probably one of my favorite pictures. It was so stunning outside with everything covered in deep snow. The stream was frozen; the forest was still and there was this perfect bench all alone. The quilt just warmed it up.

I have a thing for matching quilts to the room I am making them for. Apparently, I also have a thing for matching my sweater and pants to my quilt.

The first version I made also used Art Gallery Fabric Solids. It was from their Pure Solids fabric collection. This was the first time I had used Pure Solids and it was better than I had thought!! These are really soft to sew with and the colors are exactly as said: Pure. They are crisp and clean and not muddled at all.

These Art Gallery Fabrics are just stunning! Look at how much of an impact they make even unquilted. They are just Pure color.

If you have followed me for a while, you know I love to quilt my own quilts. I don’t just do straight line quilting either. I discovered Walk and Walk 2.0 by Jacquie Gering. They changed my quilting life! There are so many designs. What is more, Jacquie gives fantastic instructions for how to start quilting on your domestic machine. If you had told me last year, I would be quilting this complicated a design, I probably would not have believed you.

I love quilting straight lines because it is a fast finish. But they sure do look lovely. I built this desk to sink my Janome into it so I can sew with my shoulders in a relaxed position.
