I have made the wonderful promise (ahem…mistake??) of telling my kids I could make one seasonal quilt for each of them-in one month. Never again-she said for the THIRD year in a row.
When I got back into quilting in September of 2018, I decided in October that I would take my kids to the fabric store and let them pick their fabric and I would choose the pattern from my Block Magazine. I said no problem, I can make FOUR twin size quilts by December 1st for Advent. Needless to say, I was pulling late nights and thought I would never quilt again but I got it done. Then I did the same thing last year with Halloween quilts but at least started in August and limited the size to large throws. I also did a Jelly Roll race quilt for all since they are so fast!
This year I released my own Valentine’s pattern and yes, I promised one for each. Why do I do these things to myself??

Am I glad I did it? YES but…never again. Ha! My husband says wait few months-you will do it again. Maybe he knows my over ambitious self too well. I am happy to report that everyone loves their quilt! I actually ended up making one of these for my living room and the littlest guy decided he wanted a race car road panel quilt so I made that too. Yea, can you say crazy? But that quilt is for another day of sharing! Today is all about my Parade of Hearts of Quilt.

I made the green one for my husband since it is his favorite color. It turned out so sophisticated and the brushed basics by Ruby Star Society looks amazing!

I did the quilting myself with my domestic. I used a wavy line about two and a half inches apart. It makes for a fast quilting job and it still gets a hint of crinkle. The golden stripe fabric is by Riley Blake and it was just perfect for this quilt. I started with the stripe and the green from my scrap bins and it all just came together.

This Grunge Basics by Moda was just a perfect fit. It matched the grey in the jets and it matched the overall feel I wanted this quilt to have. The backing and binding were leftovers from a prior quilt so I was happy to use my stash.

I came up with the idea of the hearts based on my kids ages 4, 6, 8, and 10 and the starting squares are those sizes too. They often parade in our house and I thought how cute it would be on a quilt. All the hearts parading around.

This was the last one I made and I was ready for something different. I actually arrived at the scrappy border and started it. I was about 1/4 of the way done when I decided the scrappy border was not right for this quilt. Instead I added a 1 inch navy border and added a 3 inch border using the backing fabric. It was the backing that was my 6 yr olds favorite part after all. I LOVED the result.

I did straight line quilting with bright blue thread to match the border. It was perfect. I usually use white and I was almost out of white thread. So I went to my color thread stash and sure enough, the idea of an electric blue thread struck me. It was the perfect final touch to this quilt.

I really love the how the snow animal backing is whimsical and the front was modern and serious. My 6yr old’s favorite color is black but he saw this backing I had picked for another quilt and said “oh Mommy, I love stuffed animals so much.” He is Mister Tough Guy but his favorite toys are stuffed animals. The cuter, the more the loves them. This quilt reminds me of him in just that way!
I survived another round of over-promising quilts! Until next year….. 🙂
